Thanks for the comment, Godfree. People's Daily describes itself as a "mouthpiece" (from their website: "People's Daily, the mouthpiece of the Communist Party of China (CPC)").
I welcome you to read President Xi's comments on his highly publicized tour of party-state media in 2016, in which he said: “The media run by the party and the government are the propaganda fronts and must be surnamed 'Party'.” Long before President Xi, the media was regarded by the Party leadership as its “throat, tongue, eyes, and ears.” Literature on this topic abounds.
the Party mouthpiece, the People's Daily??
Mouthpiece? Seriously?
Perhaps we need more mouthpieces.
PD is the most trusted mass medium on earth, because it tells the truth at least 80% of the time.
No Western mouthpiece (all publications are de fact mouthpieces) comes remotely close.

Quite so. But you miss my point.
In the tradition of rectifying names, China calls spades 'spades'.
They call propaganda 'propaganda,' for example. And censorship 'censorship.
We pretend that the NYT is not a State Department mouthpiece, that we don't do propaganda, and that we don't do censorship.
Equitable treatment is all I ask.
